This week in soap history: Corrie water torture
David gets a soaking

In October 2006, Coronation Street builder Charlie Stubbs repeatedly plunged teenager David Platt’s head in a bath of ice-cold water, as the climax of a long campaign of bullying and intimidation. Soap bosses even cut a hole in the side of the bath, so viewers could watch the teenager’s torment from every angle. The scenes caused shock and outrage, with one MP declaring Corrie bosses had reached “the base of depravity”. After a full investigation, Ofcom decided the scene was “editorially justified” but admitted that ITV should’ve given more warning about the violent content before the episode was aired.
